After the annual CES Consumer Electronics Show, PC manufacturers are typically very busy, as they need to quickly launch their newly announced products in global markets.
On January 13, 2025, Asus held a product launch event in Jingdezhen, China, introducing the ZenBook series laptops that were recently showcased at CES to the Chinese market. This event also marked the debut of Intel’s Arrow Lake mobile chips in China.
The newly released Asus ZenBook series includes three models:
- Asus ZenBook 14 Duo 2025, featuring Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, a 2.8K 120Hz OLED screen, starting at approximately $2,050
- Asus ZenBook 14 2025, featuring Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, a 2.8K 120Hz OLED screen, priced at approximately $1,025
- Asus ZenBook 16 Air, featuring Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, priced at approximately $1,367
The new models largely retain the design style of the 2024 versions. The front of the body features a cut texture design, using high-tech ceramic aluminum material, and incorporates a hidden hinge design. This design not only enhances aesthetics and cooling but also maintains a lightweight and slim profile.
The Asus Zenbook 16 Air is the thinnest model, with a thickness of only 11mm and a weight of 1.49kg. The Asus Zenbook 14 2025 has a thickness of 13.9mm and weighs 1.19kg. The Asus Zenbook 14 Duo 2025, without the keyboard, has a thickness of 14.5mm and weighs 1.35kg. Their thicknesses are generally kept under 15mm, even reaching 13mm or 11mm.
Even in the market of lightweight and portable laptops that emphasize appearance, the Asus Zenbook series is easily recognizable.
In recent years, lightweight laptops have become one of the most competitive fields in the computer market. With the popularization of Artificial Intelligence Personal Computers (AIPC), this competition has become even fiercer.
In 2020, over 80% of lightweight laptops on the market had a thickness of more than 15mm, with thinner products having a market share of less than 10%. By 2024, the market share of lightweight laptops with a thickness of less than 15mm had reached 15%.
Becoming thinner is just a superficial change; more importantly, today’s lightweight laptops have stronger performance.
Due to the rapid development of Central Processing Unit (CPU) platform computing capabilities in recent years, many lightweight laptops are no longer just about good looks.
Take the Zenbook 14 2025, equipped with the latest Ultra 9 285H processor, for example. It is one of the first to use the Arrow Lake H architecture, featuring 6 performance cores (P) + 8 efficiency cores (E) + 2 low-power efficiency cores (LP-E). Compared to the previous generation, single-thread and multi-thread performance have both improved by about 15%.
In terms of graphics performance, the new built-in Intel Arc integrated graphics have improved by about 22% compared to the previous generation. Combined with Intel’s XeSS super-resolution technology, it not only performs well in online games but can also handle large AAA games. For example, with “Cyberpunk 2077” at 1080P resolution, the Lingyao 14 equipped with Ultra 9 285H can run at 50-60 frames per second on medium to low settings, which was unimaginable on lightweight laptops a couple of years ago. On-site Intel technicians also told iFanr that they are actively working on collaborations with more games like “Black Myth: Wukong” to ensure Intel processors can provide a better gaming experience.
Foreign media Tom’s Guide commented that if the Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) released in 2023 is Apple’s M4, then the Ultra 200H is the M4 Pro. In other words, it represents a step from energy efficiency to all-around performance. To fully utilize the processor’s capabilities, ASUS has also partnered with Zhizhi to integrate AI software like XiaoShuo Assistant, ensuring they are not left behind in the AIPC layout.
In addition to performance breakthroughs, lightweight laptops have also made many innovations in product form.
The new ASUS Lingyao 14 dual-screen laptop is equipped with two full-size screens, providing very flexible office options. When handling spreadsheets, dual vertical screens are more efficient; for face-to-face presentations, dual-screen mirroring is a great way to present; in daily use, the dual screens can adapt to software interfaces, combining into one large screen; of course, you can also cover the secondary screen with a keyboard and use it as a regular laptop.
The design of dual-screen laptops aimed at niche needs to some extent reflects the current competitive landscape of the lightweight laptop market. Simply becoming thinner or more powerful is not enough. From lightweight and portable to lightweight with a large screen and now to lightweight with dual screens, user demands have become more segmented, and the requirements for product form have become more detailed.
According to IDC, the shipment volume of AIPC is expected to reach 100 million units by 2025. By then, personalized needs will become routine with the popularization of AI, and the evolution of lightweight laptops in 2025 has just begun.
