Denmark’s Eurowind Energy and Austria’s Renalfa IPP have started construction of what they term is the 1st hybrid renewable energy complex in Bulgaria. They are executing the plant through their joint venture (JV) EURA IPP.
The Executive Director of EURA IPP Elena Markova said, “This project demonstrates that renewable energy has a leading role in the energy transformation of coal mining regions and will provide a strong boost for green transition in Bulgaria.”
Local EPC contractor Solarpro Holding is constructing the Tenevo RES complex in the Tenevo region, having started with 237.58 MW solar PV capacity under phase I.
The solar project is scheduled for completion in early 2025 when it will become one of the country’s largest clean energy generation projects, according to the project partners. They add that the solar part of the project alone can generate enough clean energy to suffice the requirements of 100,000 households.
Phase II of the complex will add over 250 MW wind turbine capacity, along with 250 MW/500 MWh batteries.
“We are happy that we launched this large renewable energy project in Bulgaria. This will be the first hybrid power generating facility of its kind in the country and one of the biggest and most complex clean energy projects in southeast Europe,” added Elena Markova.
Currently the largest operational solar project in Bulgaria has an installed capacity of 123 MW.
