South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company this week unveiled its all-new, battery-powered Ioniq 9 at a global launch event held at the iconic Goldstein House in Los Angeles. This follows the release of teaser images of the vehicle over the past two months.

The choice of location underscores the importance of the US market for this new three-row, seven-seater SUV, despite concerns that battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in the country may be impacted by the expected withdrawal of tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) after the new Donald Trump-led government takes office in January.

The Ioniq 9 is built on Hyundai’s dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), with its 3,130 mm wheelbase providing an “expansive interior space that fuses cutting-edge design with innovative electric vehicle (EV) technology.”

The “Relaxation Seats” in the first and second rows can fully recline and are equipped with leg rests, allowing up to four people to fully rest during vehicle charging. The seats also feature Hyundai’s “Dynamic Body Care system,” which uses pressure and vibration to stimulate blood circulation and help reduce fatigue on long journeys, and also come with a “Dynamic Touch Massage” function. The second-row seats can fully swivel, enabling the second- and third-row occupants to face each other when the vehicle is stationary.

The slidable Universal Island 2.0 console provides additional storage space, while the walk-through front-row seating layout enhances accessibility and convenience.

The Ioniq 9 is powered by a 110kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) lithium-ion battery pack which gives it a range of up to 620 km, with an energy consumption of 194 Wh/km. The batteries can be charged from 10% to 80% in 24 minutes using a 350 kW charger.

The Long-Range RWD model is driven by a 160 kW rear motor, while the Long-Range AWD model features an additional 70 kW front motor sand the Performance AWD model is powered by two 160 kW motors – giving it an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Earlier this month José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor’s global chief operating officer (COO) and head of its North American operations, confirmed that the Ioniq 9 will be produced at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) plant in the state of Georgia.
