Moto X50 Ultra Hands-On: A Nostalgia Phone for Many

Moto X50 Ultra

Earlier in 2024, Meizu officially released their latest flagship, the Meizu 21 Pro. After the launch event, Li Nan, one of the founders of Meizu, expressed on his social media that the most comfortable phone width for one-handed use is actually no more than 74mm. However, due to the hardware stacking, most currently exceed this width.

Previous reviews of products like the Huawei nova 12 Ultra and OPPO Reno, which focus on offline sales, have repeatedly mentioned that although some products may not look extremely cutting-edge in terms of specs, if you have the opportunity to feel them in person, you will be won over by their slim size and excellent hand feel. The Moto X50 Ultra is one such product.

With a width of around 72mm, a weight of 197g, and curved edges that seamlessly connect the back cover, middle frame and screen, this phone feels nearly flawless in the hand.

slim phone and good hand feel

Moreover, in this aspect, the Moto X50 Ultra pays full tribute to its classic predecessor, the Moto X, by introducing a cypress wood back cover version. Back in the day, Moto won over many users with its customizable appearance. The return of the wood back cover in 2024 has many old fans exclaiming, “Youth is back!”

However, the version received this time is the Distant Dark Ink artificial leather edition. Although it doesn’t evoke the same nostalgia as the woody back, its hand feel and texture are still commendable.

Screen, Performance, Battery Life, Fast Charging – It Has What It Should

Besides the excellent hand feel, the Moto X50 Ultra is well-equipped in other aspects too. The front features a 1.5K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, peak 2800 nit brightness P3 wide color gamut display that supports global DC dimming. Both the screen and camera have passed Pantone color and skin tone dual certification, offering a highly transparent viewing experience.

Performance-wise, the third-generation Snapdragon 8s chipset, combined with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, forms the familiar performance trifecta. This chipset has been thoroughly tested before, so there’s no need to elaborate – it can easily handle daily gaming, multimedia entertainment, or photography.

Since the body is relatively slim, the Moto X50 Ultra is equipped with a 4500mAh battery, supporting 125W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging. It is currently the only product with the third-generation Snapdragon 8s that supports both types of fast charging. It remains to be seen whether this trade-off of battery capacity for hand feel is widely supported.

As a sub-flagship chipset, many Snapdragon 8s devices have compromised on configuration, but the Moto X50 Ultra is different. It has all the features one would expect, including stereo dual speakers, NFC, Wi-Fi 7, and IP68 dust and water resistance. From a specs perspective, this is undoubtedly the flagship phone across Lenovo’s entire phone lineup.

A Slim Flagship Phone with A Telephoto Lens is also Good at Shooting

three rear lenses are sufficient to meet most daily shooting needs

Unlike many slim flagship phones that omit the telephoto lens to achieve a thin body, the Moto X50 Ultra’s three rear lenses are all essential. The 50 MP main camera, 64 MP periscope telephoto, and 50MP ultra-wide angle macro lens combination is sufficient to meet most people’s daily shooting needs.

Benefiting from AI algorithm enhancements and Pantone color calibration, the Moto X50 Ultra faithfully reproduces colors. The color performance is particularly reminiscent of photos taken by iPhones. The system configuration also offers various fun shooting features like haute couture portrait and tilt-shift.

Judging from the current sample images, Moto has done a decent job in detail restoration, but its color performance is not particularly advantageous compared to other camera flagship phones.

Speaking of Moto’s history in mobile photography, it can’t be denied they were pioneers. The Moto ZN5, launched in partnership with Kodak during the feature phone era, was one of the first true camera phones. Moto was also the initial manufacturer to collaborate with the legendary camera brand Hasselblad. Sincerely hope that in this era of breakthroughs in camera flagships, Moto can also provide users with more distinctive color performance.

Lenovo’s Debut AI Phone Shows Promise, But Still Needs Work

Lenovo's first AI-power smartphone

The Moto X50 Ultra, Lenovo’s first smartphone openly marketed as AI-powered, comes with the Xiaotian intelligent voice assistant baked in. Its biggest feature is that its voice feedback sounds very much like a real person’s speech and pauses.

Xiaotian brings an AI toolkit that handles text message generation and photo enhancement, but I found myself using the AI-powered travel assistant the most. It intelligently parses your itinerary from messages and puts the details at your fingertips. However, it currently only supports the Variflight, which is less popular than Umetrip. Hope Lenovo can quickly support other travel apps to improve the user experience.

As Lenovo’s AI business gradually matures, we will see more intelligent, efficient, and convenient new features on Moto phones, providing users with a more comfortable experience.

Conclusion

Moto X50 Ultra

The Moto X50 Ultra is the kind of phone that instantly sparks a rush of nostalgia the moment you pick it up and hear that iconic “Hello Moto” greeting.

For millennials who grew up in the 80s and 90s, Moto is not just a mobile phone brand; it also carries our student days of secretly listening to music with earphones tucked into sleeves and sending text messages with one hand using the T9 keyboard in our pockets.

There are few brands left with such memories and heritage. Sincerely hope Moto does not become the next one to disappear.
